The new 2023 Dodge Charger: It keeps on flexing its muscles
The Dodge Charger is the prototypical American muscle car and if you're in the market for sheer speed, this is the sedan for you. The newest version of the Charger comes with a standard V6 engine and rear-wheel drive but you can choose to get all-wheel drive if you prefer. Move up to the R/T trim and get a big V8 engine or choose the Scat Pack model with an even bigger V8 and even more horsepower. What's new for 2023?
The Dodge Charger for 2023 didn't need any significant changes but it does offer some popular colors from the Charger's storied past including B5 Blue, Sublime Green and Plum Crazy. All R/T models will have a special new "345" badge located on the front fender that will pay tribute to the muscular 345-cubic-inch HEMI® V8 engine that's crouching under the hood.
The Charger SXT trim
The entry-level SXT trim comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that generates 292 horsepower. Power goes to the rear wheels but buyers from Emporia VA and Rocky Mount, NC can choose an all-wheel drive system instead. It comes with a disconnecting front axle to help increase fuel efficiency. Other standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, a power trunk release and power side mirrors. Inside the cabin you'll find one-touch up and down power windows and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Available features at this level include an 8.4-inch touch screen, 19-inch alloy wheels and an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat that comes with two-way power lumbar support.
The Charger GT trim
The GT version of the Dodge Charger starts with the SXT's bigger 300-horsepower V6 engine and it also offers you the option of all-wheel drive. The GT comes with a performance hood and a functional hood scoop along with performance brakes, performance suspension, dual rear exhaust tips and heated side mirrors. The GT rolls on 20-inch alloy wheels that are wrapped in all-season performance tires. The GT interior adds an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat along with two-way power lumbar support, a performance steering wheel and dual-zone automatic climate control.
The Charger R/T trim
The Dodge Charger R/T is the first trim that comes standard with a V8 engine. In this case, that means a 5.7-liter HEMI® with 370 horsepower. It's a power plant that can take this big sedan from zero to 60 mph in about 5 seconds. The RT trim gets stronger rear axles to handle the higher level of power in the V8 and it adds a performance exhaust, 20-inch wheels and a 160-mph speedometer. At this level, if you can upgrade to a Harman Kardon premium sound system with 19 speakers.
The Charger R/T Scat Pack
The R/T Scat Pack is a more powerful version of the R/T trim and it's capable of being used on an enclosed race track or a drag strip. The Scat Pack's credentials include a 6.4-liter HEMI® V8 engine that's good for 485 horsepower and is built with a 398-cubic-inch displacement. Other performance upgrades include a more muscular sport suspension, a larger rear axle, 4-piston Brembo brakes and a limited-slip differential. The R/T Scat Pack comes with a 180-mph speedometer along with configurable drive mode settings that let you adjust steering response, shift points, traction and stability control.
The Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody trim
If you're looking for speed, the Hellcat can deliver. It starts with a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® V8 engine that can generate a mind-boggling 717 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. For this trim, you get a race Cool Down system that keeps running the fan and the water pump to help cool off the liquid coolant after you shut down the engine. Other high-performance features include six-piston Brembo brakes along with Bilstein adaptive shock absorbers.
Engines and performance
As you can tell from the list of trims above, the Dodge Charger has a variety of ways to build on its NASCAR heritage. The V6 engine gives you the availability of all-wheel drive and the HEMI® V8 engines open up new possibilities in terms of acceleration and speed. The Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack can make an impressive run from zero to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.
Fuel economy
Chances are you're not considering a Dodge Charger to set new records for fuel efficiency but it can do better in that category than you might expect. The V6 with all-wheel drive can get as much as 26 MPG on highways around Henderson and Wilson NC and the 485-horsepower V8 can give you up to 25 MPG on the highway.
Infotainment technology
The 2023 Dodge Charger comes with a standard 7-inch touch screen, smartphone connectivity, satellite radio and a six-speaker stereo. Also standard are keyless entry, remote start and push-button start. You can upgrade to an 8.4-inch touch screen and a 19-speaker stereo.
Safety technology
The 2023 Dodge Charger comes with a standard rear view camera and rear parking sensors. Available safety features include blind-spot monitoring, a rear cross-traffic alert system, lane departure warning, forward automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
